How do potholes damage your car?

We all hit potholes every so often. With the harsh winter we just went through, there are bound to be potholes scattered about your normal routes throughout Minnesota. The reality is that potholes can do some serious damage to your car, so if you’ve hit one too many, feel free to come by St. Paul Automotive so that we can check out your tires and suspension to ensure everything is still working properly.

What Causes Potholes?

Potholes are typically caused when water makes its way under the pavement then freezes and thaws, ultimately causing the road to weaken. This then can cause the pavement to crack, which as vehicles drive over the road, causes it to further weaken and eventually turn into potholes. Severe winter weather often accelerates the creation of potholes.

Why Type of Damage Can Potholes Cause?

Potholes can cause a wide array of different car problems, a few of which include:

  • Tire damage including deflated tires or bulges or cracks in your tires
  • Damage to wheel rims
  • Your vehicle beginning to shake or pull to one side, which often indicates some type of alignment problem
  • Noises coming from your exhaust system
  • Fluid leaking from your undercarriage

If you notice any of the above issues, it’s best to check with a certified mechanic like our team at St. Paul Automotive. Our ASE certified mechanics will give you an honest assessment of any damage so that you can decide what to do. If you have significant damage from potholes, it may be worth contacting your insurance agent to see if your auto policy could cover some of the pothole repair costs.

How to Avoid Potholes?

While some potholes are unavoidable, there are a few things you can do to safely maneuver around them when possible. First off, it’s best to leave a safe distance between your car and the car in front of you so that you can see a pothole and have time to move around it. Also pay attention to puddles of water in the road, because they could be hiding a large and potentially damaging pothole.
